What is an underbody inspection: underbody inspection explained
An underbody inspection is a structured examination of the underside of a vehicle or machine, covering chassis, suspension, steering, brake and fuel lines, exhaust, driveline and corrosion, carried out from an inspection pit, on a vehicle lift, or with the asset raised and properly supported on stands.
Everything it looks at sits out of sight during normal use. Corrosion, a weeping brake pipe, a cracked crossmember, a chafed wiring loom: none of these announce themselves from the driver's seat. The first symptom is usually the failure.
The term is standard in fleet workshops, plant depots, HGV and PSV maintenance and at testing stations. On tracked machines you will also hear undercarriage inspection, which usually means something narrower: the tracks, rollers, idlers and sprockets specifically.
What does an underbody inspection cover?
- Structure. Chassis rails, crossmembers, outriggers, subframes, body mounts, welds and evidence of previous repair.
- Corrosion. Surface rust versus perforation, and whether it sits near a suspension, steering or brake mounting where it matters most.
- Braking. Rigid pipes, flexible hoses, chambers and actuators, ABS sensors and cabling, leaks and chafe points.
- Suspension and steering. Springs, air bags, dampers, bushes, ball joints, track rods, security and free play.
- Driveline. Propshafts, universal joints, centre bearings, axle casings, gearbox and differential leaks.
- Fuel and exhaust. Tank straps and lines, exhaust security, any leak upstream of the cab.
- Ancillaries. Air lines, hydraulic hoses, spare wheel carriers, tail lift rams, underrun protection and catwalks.
How is an underbody inspection carried out?
Four access methods dominate, and each one quietly decides what the inspector can actually see.
- Inspection pit. Standing access along the full length of a long vehicle. Weak on lighting and ventilation unless it was engineered for both.
- Vehicle lift. The whole underside at eye level, wheels free. The workshop default.
- Drive-on ramp. Fast, but the wheels stay loaded, so suspension and steering play cannot be assessed properly.
- Jack and axle stands. Roadside or field work. The stands take the load. Never the jack.
Drive-over scanners and pole cameras are increasingly used for a first look, at gate checks and on security screening in particular. They record what the underside looks like. They do not let anyone reach up and shake a track rod, so they inform an inspection rather than being one.
Why the access is the real hazard
Looking at an axle is low risk. Getting a person and several tonnes of asset into position above them is not.
- The lift. Under the UK Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, the Health and Safety Executive sets thorough examination by a competent person at every 6 months for lifting equipment used to lift people and every 12 months for other lifting equipment, and its motor vehicle repair guidance puts vehicle lifts on a 6 monthly thorough examination. HSE is explicit that this is in addition to routine maintenance, not a substitute for it.
- The pit. HSE records a worker who fell about 1.5 metres into an inspection pit while helping position a vehicle, breaking three ribs and a wrist. Open pits get covered, barriered or chained.
- Fumes. Petrol and LPG engine exhaust contains up to 10% carbon monoxide according to HSE, and a pit is exactly where it settles. Extraction goes on the tailpipe, not on an open shutter door.
- LPG. Heavier than air. HSE guidance is to park and work on LPG fuelled vehicles away from pits, drains and other openings in the ground.
Underbody inspection in practice: a worked example
A 7.5 tonne rigid comes in for its routine safety inspection. On the lift, the technician finds a brake pipe corroded where it passes over the rear spring hanger, plus a seeping wheel seal. Neither was visible from the ground, so no daily check would ever have caught them. The pipe is photographed against the job card, graded immediate, and the vehicle is held off the road until it is replaced.
How it differs from a pre start check, a service and a test
- Pre start check. Daily, by the driver or operator, from the cab and ground level. It cannot reach the underside, and it is not meant to.
- Safety inspection. Periodic, by a competent technician, on a planned interval. The underbody inspection is one component of it.
- Roadworthiness inspection or MOT. A pass or fail against a defined standard on one day. Passing is not evidence that maintenance is happening between tests.
One rule ties all three together: an underbody defect only exists once it is recorded. Photograph it, attach it to the job, and give it a severity so the workshop can rank it against everything else in the queue. A finding described verbally at handover is a finding somebody will argue about later.
