What is video prospecting: video prospecting explained
Video prospecting is the use of short, individually recorded videos in cold outreach. A rep records a video for someone who has not enquired and sends it by email, SMS or LinkedIn to start a conversation, so the video does the job the first paragraph of a cold email used to do: earn another thirty seconds of attention.
The word "cold" is carrying real weight in that sentence, and most of what follows depends on it.
What video prospecting does, and what it does not fix
A video sent to a stranger is still cold outreach. It changes the format of the approach, not the fundamentals underneath it. If the list is wrong, the offer is vague, or the timing is irrelevant, a video makes those problems visible faster rather than solving them.
What it does reliably do is lift the number of people who respond at all. Backlinko's analysis of 12 million outreach emails, run with Pitchbox, found that only 8.5% of outreach emails get a response, and that adding a single follow-up message lifts replies by 65.8%.
Those are the odds video is trying to move. Move them against a badly built list and you still get nothing back. Move them against the right 200 local businesses running vans, and it is a different quarter.

How does video prospecting work?
- Build the list before you build anything else: named people, a reason each one is on the list, and something you can see about their situation.
- Record something only that person would get: their premises, their fleet, their current vehicle, the page you were looking at with their name on it.
- Cap it at 45 seconds: a cold video is a knock at the door, not a presentation.
- Ask for a reply, not a meeting: the meeting is two steps away, and asking for it early reads as a script.
- Follow up at least once: one video and silence is not a test of anything.
A worked example from a fleet list
A dealer group wants local business contracts. The team pulls 60 companies within 20 miles running five or more vans, finds a named contact at each, and films forty seconds per company, naming the business and one specific thing about its fleet.
Sixty videos take an afternoon. Even a handful of replies is a handful of real conversations that did not exist that morning, and the contacts who never reply have still seen a face from the dealership down the road.
Notice what did the work there. The list was specific, the video proved somebody had actually looked, and the ask was small enough to answer in one line.
How is video prospecting different from video follow-up?
Follow-up video goes to somebody who raised a hand. Prospecting video goes to somebody who did not. Both are one to one video and they behave nothing alike.
- Permission: follow-up is expected, so it starts with credit. Prospecting has to earn the first five seconds.
- Length: a walkaround for a live enquiry can run ninety seconds. A cold video cannot.
- Reply rate: expect a large gap, and never report the two together.
- Compliance: cold outreach is regulated. Replying to an existing enquiry usually is not.
The compliance part nobody enjoys
Cold outreach to consumers is restricted in most markets a dealer group operates in, and the rules attach to the sending, not to whether the message happens to contain a video. Lawful basis, consent where it applies, and a working opt-out are the same requirements they always were.
Check yours with whoever owns marketing compliance in the group before a rep sends two hundred of anything. Prospecting to a named business contact is generally the safer ground, which is part of why fleet and business development teams get more out of the format than showroom teams do.
Who it actually suits
Business development, fleet, and anyone building a book from scratch.
A BDC working warm internet enquiries is not prospecting, whatever a software vendor calls it, and mislabelling warm follow-up as prospecting is how teams end up chasing reply rates they will never see. For the warm side of the sequence, personalized video for car sales covers what fits better.
