Fleet tyre inspection, defined: the routine check of every tyre on a fleet's vehicles for tread, pressure and damage, recorded so a worn or damaged tyre is replaced before it fails.
A fleet tyre inspection is the routine check of every tyre on a fleet's vehicles and trailers for tread depth, inflation pressure, sidewall and tread damage, and wheel security. It is done by the driver at the daily walkaround, by a technician at the planned safety inspection, and often by a tyre contractor on a fleet-wide round. US readers will know the same task as a tire inspection.
The definition matters because tyres are the item most likely to put a fleet vehicle outside the law between services. In the UK the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the whole circumference for cars and vans up to 3,500 kg, and 1 mm for vehicles over 3,500 kg. A cut, a bulge or exposed cord makes a tyre illegal regardless of how much tread is left.
What a fleet tyre inspection covers
- Tread depth measured with a gauge at several points across the width, not eyed from standing height. Uneven wear across the tread points to pressure or alignment faults.
- Pressure against the manufacturer's figure for the axle and the load, checked cold with a gauge. Under-inflation is the usual cause of the shoulder wear and heat build-up that ends in a blowout.
- Sidewall and tread damage: cuts, bulges, cracking, exposed cord, embedded objects, and on twin wheels the inner sidewalls that nobody sees without crouching.
- Wheel security: wheel nuts, nut indicators, rim damage, missing valve caps.
- Age and type: the date code on older tyres, mixed constructions on an axle, and on heavy vehicles whether a regrooved or retreaded tyre is fitted where it is allowed.
How often fleet tyres are checked
Three rhythms overlap. The driver looks at tread, damage and obvious deflation every day as part of the walkaround, which for HGVs follows DVSA guidance and for vans is good practice. A technician measures and records the tyres at each planned safety inspection, the layer described under roadworthiness inspection. Pressures are checked with a gauge on a fixed cycle, weekly or fortnightly on most fleets, because a visual check cannot tell 6 bar from 8 on a truck tyre. Larger operators add a contractor round where every tyre on the fleet is measured, logged and replaced on a plan, the same idea as planned maintenance applied to rubber.
Fleet tyre inspection example: a shoulder-worn van tyre at a utilities depot
A utilities engineer starts the day with the walkaround on a long-wheelbase van. The nearside front tyre looks fine from the driver's door. Crouched at the wheel arch, the outer shoulder is worn to the wear bars while the centre of the tread still has 4 mm. The driver photographs the tread across its width with the gauge in shot and reports it.
The fleet office reads the photo, books the van into the tyre bay that afternoon and asks for the alignment to be checked, because a tyre wearing on one shoulder is usually telling you about tracking or a persistently low pressure, not about the tyre. The replacement, the alignment result and the photo sit on the vehicle's record. If a tyre on that van fails in eight months, the fleet can show the pattern was spotted and the cause dealt with, not just the symptom.
What a fleet tyre inspection does not do, and the mistakes teams make
It does not replace the gauge. A visual check catches damage and a flat. It does not tell you the pressure or the tread depth to the millimetre, and the legal limit is a millimetre.
It does not cover what was not looked at. A trailer that is dropped and picked up by different units, the inner tyre of a twin-wheel set and the spare are the ones that fail inspections because they belong to nobody's routine.
The recurring mistakes: measuring one point in the centre of the tread and calling it done, kicking a tyre instead of gauging it, ignoring a sidewall bulge because the tread is legal, running tyres past their age with no date-code check, and leaving trailers out of the round. The DVSA examiner at the roadside checks the same items the driver was meant to.
Where the tyre record goes
The driver's finding goes on the daily defect report, the technician's measurements go on the safety inspection sheet, and the contractor's readings go into the tyre management log. All three end up in the vehicle's fleet management file, kept for the same period as the rest of the maintenance records, at least 15 months for operators under DVSA guidance. A dated photo of the tread and the gauge is the inspection evidence that turns "tyre checked" into proof of what was seen and when.
