What is a VIN? The vehicle identification number, explained character by character
A VIN, or vehicle identification number, is the 17-character code that uniquely identifies one specific vehicle, split into three blocks that encode who built it, what it is, and which individual unit it is. It is the primary key for the whole vehicle record system: titles, recalls, insurance, service history and auction listings all hang off it.
The 17-character format is not a convention. In North America it is regulation, and internationally it is a published standard.
What do the 17 characters mean?
Under 49 CFR Part 565, the US rule that governs VIN content, the code divides into four sections:
- Positions 1 to 3, the WMI: the World Manufacturer Identifier. Who built the vehicle and where. A leading 1, 4 or 5 means the United States, 2 means Canada, 3 means Mexico, J means Japan, W means Germany, S means the United Kingdom.
- Positions 4 to 8, the VDS: the Vehicle Descriptor Section. Model line, body style, restraint system, engine and series. The manufacturer decides what each character means inside the space the rule allows, which is why you cannot decode a VDS without the maker's table.
- Position 9, the check digit: a single character whose only job, in the words of the regulation, is to provide a means for verifying the accuracy of any VIN transcription.
- Positions 10 to 17, the VIS: the Vehicle Identifier Section. In North America position 10 is the model year and position 11 the assembly plant, with the last characters running as a sequential production number.
The letters I, O and Q never appear anywhere in a VIN, because they are too easily misread as 1 and 0. If you are looking at one of those characters, you are looking at a transcription error or a fake.
How does the check digit work?
Every character gets converted to a number and multiplied by a fixed positional weight (8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 10, 0, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2). The products are added, the total is divided by 11, and the remainder is the check digit. A remainder of 10 is written as the letter X. Position 9 carries a weight of zero, so the check digit never influences its own calculation.
What this catches is a mistyped or transposed VIN, which is the everyday failure. It does not tell you the vehicle is genuine. A cloned VIN copied correctly from a real car passes the check perfectly.
What varies by market
The 17-character format applies to vehicles from the 1981 model year onward in North America, where NHTSA made it mandatory for passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks and buses. Anything older carries a shorter, manufacturer-specific number and cannot be decoded the same way. Internationally the same structure comes from ISO 3779, which sets the content and structure of the VIN.
- The check digit is mandatory in the US and Canada, and ISO 3779 treats it as optional. Plenty of genuine European and Asian-market VINs fail the North American formula, so a failed check on a non-North-American vehicle is inconclusive, not proof of tampering.
- The year and plant characters are fixed in North America at positions 10 and 11. Outside it, the content of the VIS is left more to the manufacturer, so do not assume position 10 is a model year on a car built for another market.
- The VDS is manufacturer-defined everywhere. Two makers can use the same character in position 5 to mean entirely different things.
Where is the VIN on a car?
It appears in several places on purpose, so that damage or tampering in one location does not erase the identity:
- The lower corner of the windscreen on the driver's side, readable from outside the car. The first place anyone checks.
- The driver's door jamb or B-pillar, on the manufacturer's label, usually alongside tyre pressures and build date.
- Stamped into the body: the bulkhead or firewall, a chassis rail under the bonnet, the floor under the front passenger seat or carpet, or the boot floor near the spare wheel well.
- The engine block and major components, on many vehicles, as a stamped or laser-etched number.
- On paper: the title or registration document, the insurance certificate and the service book.
Where VIN checks go wrong
Take a used import with a windscreen plate reading cleanly and a door-jamb label that is newer than the rest of the car. The two VINs match, the check digit validates, and the vehicle still turns out to be a clone wearing a legitimate car's identity. That is why the standard practice is to photograph two or three separate VIN locations and compare them against the documents, rather than reading one and moving on.
The VIN is also what every other record is keyed to, which is why capturing it accurately matters more than any other single field. A vehicle history report pulled against a mistyped VIN describes a different car entirely, and the same applies to the odometer reading filed alongside it. For assets other than cars, equipment verification works the same way around serial numbers and plates.
