The Monday after the hail, the calendar is full by ten. Two estimators are in the truck for the rest of the week, and by Wednesday one of them has climbed four roofs with nothing on them, sat in a kitchen with a homeowner collecting a third quote, and driven forty minutes to a "leak" that was a cracked flashing seal.

The survey visit is the post-storm bottleneck
Storm season creates an estimator problem long before it creates a lead problem.
Perceptionist's storm-season analysis describes the shape most owners will recognise: a company that normally handles 15 to 20 calls a day sees 80 to 120 in the 24 hours after a major event, and by hour 48 most local roofers are booked out two to four weeks on inspections. The insurance replacement ticket is the prize, often $8,000 to $20,000 or more, so every enquiry gets a truck.
The trouble is what the truck finds. Most post-storm enquiries do not need a person on the roof to be answered; they need a person who can see the roof and the ceiling below it. A missing tile is visible from the drive. A dry, old ceiling stain is visible from the sofa.
Neither needs a ladder to be turned into a quote or a polite "this isn't storm damage".
Every one of those visits is a truck roll with a roofer's day attached. The maths is the same as in any field service business (we walk through it in reduce truck rolls), with one difference roofing owners feel more than anyone: the visit itself is dangerous.
Roofing Contractor, reporting the BLS census, counts 113 roofer fatalities in 2023, 84% of them falls, which keeps roofing the third deadliest civilian occupation in the US. In the UK, HSE puts it plainly: almost one in five deaths in construction involve roof work, and many of the dead were only repairing or cleaning a roof.
A speculative survey on a wet roof for a homeowner collecting quotes is an exposure with no job at the end of it. What to have the homeowner film, and in what order
The homeowner already wants to film. Every guide online tells them to narrate a walkthrough, state the date, pan slowly and keep the raw file, as Weather Shield's documentation guide does.
The missing part is what a roofer needs to see and in what order. That is your job, and it is the whole difference between guided capture and a photo dump.
Build the flow so the interior comes before the roof, because the interior is where the visit decision usually gets made. Here is the step order we use for a storm-damage flow:
- Each elevation from the ground. Front, back, both sides, standing far enough back to get the whole slope. An example photo in the step shows the homeowner what "far enough" looks like.
- Anything on the ground. Tiles or shingles in the garden, ridge pieces, a pile of granules at the downpipe, branches on the roof. A hand or a shoe in frame for scale.
- Gutters and downpipes. Sagging, pulled away, overflowing, full of granules. Filmed from below, no ladder.
- Flashing and penetrations. Chimney, vents, skylights, the aerial, the solar mounts. Zoomed from the ground; the flow says "hold still for five seconds on each".
- Every ceiling stain, inside. A wide shot to place it in the room, a close-up with a hand for scale, and a yes/no question: is it damp to the touch right now?
- The loft or attic. Torch on, phone up: daylight through the deck, wet timber, dark insulation, dripping. If the homeowner can't get up there, the flow says so and moves on.
- The questions. When was the storm? Was there any leak or stain before it? Roughly how old is the roof? Is this going to an insurer? A "yes" to the pre-existing leak question steers the next step, and tells your estimator this may be wear rather than storm damage before they have watched a second of footage.
- Older photos, optional. If the homeowner has a picture of the roof from before the storm, an extra upload slot takes it. It arrives labelled as an upload, with its metadata checked and shown as not verified, so nobody confuses it with the footage recorded in the session.
That is a capture flow: photo slots with an instruction and example each, a video step with the instruction on screen while they film, and questions whose answers travel with the footage. Two practical notes. Keep the whole thing under ten steps; a homeowner standing in the rain with a phone has a short patience budget. And write the instructions the way your best estimator talks on the phone ("point the camera at the bit where the chimney meets the tiles"), not the way a surveyor writes.
What you can quote from the footage, and what still needs a ladder
Be honest with yourself here, because the homeowner will hold you to it. A photo estimate is a quote built from visual evidence with the assumptions stated. It is not a full survey, and the flow should say so on the thank-you page.
The table's point is that the three lanes are visible from the footage, and the lane decides what the truck carries. Plenty of rows still end in a visit; the visit just stops being a guess. The Roof It Forward guide draws the same line from the homeowner's side: missing, lifted or curled shingles, dents, sagging and damaged flashing show from the ground; granule loss, micro-fractures and subtle intrusion do not.
So the limits, stated once. A video does not sound a fixing, lift a lap, or tell you whether a rooflight would take a person's weight. Hail bruising on asphalt shingles needs a hand on the shingle.
Measurement for a full replacement still comes from your aerial report or your own tape; the video is condition and interior, which the report does not give you. And the decision about the roof stays with the competent person, who now makes it with the ceiling and the loft in front of them instead of a sentence on a web form.
What changes is the calendar. The dry-stain and no-damage lanes get an answer within the hour and never take a slot. The repair lanes get a quote the same day, with the assumption written in.
The ladder lane is the only one on the survey calendar, and it arrives as a pre-visit assessment would in any trade: right materials, right access plan, right expectation.

How the week after a storm runs with guided capture
Here is the sequence, as it runs when the flow is in place:
- The enquiry comes in. By phone, web form or a neighbour's referral. The office sends a secure, personal capture link by SMS or WhatsApp while the homeowner is still on the line, or your enquiry form triggers it through the API once that connection is set up.
- The homeowner films when they can. Tuesday at 7pm, after work, in daylight if there's any left. The link opens in whatever browser is on their phone, with nothing to install and no account to make. Opened on a laptop, it shows a QR code to continue on the phone, since the phone camera is what matters here.
- The submission lands in the inbox. A shared inbox case with its own reference number in your format, your job number alongside it, the footage, the answers, and a transcript of anything the homeowner said while filming.
- The estimator reviews on Wednesday morning. Coffee, forty submissions, three lanes. The dry stains get a reply. The repairs get a quote. The ladder jobs get booked with the right materials. If a submission misses the loft, a retake request goes out in one click, the homeowner is asked why they're recording again, and the new footage hangs off the original case.
- The survey calendar holds only the ladder lane. Which means the estimator climbs roofs that need climbing, with a tarp on the truck when the loft said "wet".
None of this needs a video call, and that is the point roofers hear least often when someone says "video". A live video session removes the drive but keeps the appointment: someone has to be on the call at the same moment as the homeowner, which after a storm is the one thing you don't have.

A dry stain with no leak before the storm and nothing visible outside closes the enquiry, and a wet stain with daylight in the loft books the ladder, before anyone has studied a single tile. The roof footage mostly sets the price.

The same evidence in the claim file
A large share of these enquiries will become an insurance claim. Triple-I's 2026 severe convective storm brief puts US insured losses from severe convective storms at $51 billion in 2025, says hail alone accounts for as much as 80% of those claims in a given year, and estimates roofs at 70% to 90% of insured residential catastrophe losses. The footage the homeowner recorded for your quote is the same footage the claim will want.
What the submission carries, in one paragraph. Every photo and video recorded in the session is marked as taken through the flow, with a server-verified receipt time. The case is a sealed submission: a SHA-256 fingerprint, a downloadable manifest an adjuster can verify without an account, and a full activity timestamp trail from link sent to case closed.
Where the homeowner allowed location, it's recorded; where they declined, the case says so and treats it as neutral.
Two honest caveats travel with it. The receipt time proves when the submission arrived, not when the storm hit; that is what the storm-date question and the weather record are for. And the product surfaces signals for a person to look at, it does not pass verdicts: harder to manipulate is not the same as impossible to deceive.

Where a video assessment doesn't help
Say it in the flow, and say it to the homeowner.
- A full re-roof scope. Video tells you the roof has failed; it does not measure it or check the deck. That is measurement plus a site survey, and you should book it as one.
- Steep, high or hidden slopes. If the ground view shows nothing and the loft is boarded, the footage will say "unknown", which is still useful (the estimator arrives knowing that), but it is not a quote.
- Commercial flat roofs. The person on site cannot get above a flat roof from the car park. A drone pass or a planned access visit with edge protection is the answer there; the guided flow still collects the interior and the outlets.
- Anything with a safety duty. Rooflights, fragile coverings, access without protection. HSE's rule is that every roof is fragile until a competent person says otherwise, and no video changes that.

Frequently asked questions
Can a roofer quote roof damage from a video?
For visible repairs, yes: slipped or missing tiles, a detached gutter, lifted flashing at a chimney, with the assumption written into the quote. For hail bruising, deck condition or a full replacement, the video decides that a visit is needed and what to bring; the price follows the visit.
What should a homeowner film for a roof damage assessment?
Each side of the house from the ground, anything that has come off the roof, the gutters, the flashing round chimneys and vents, every ceiling stain with a hand for scale, and the loft or attic with a torch. A guided flow puts those in order with an example for each, so the homeowner isn't guessing.
Can hail damage be assessed from the ground?
Partly. Dents in vents and gutters, granule wash at the downpipes and shingles on the lawn show from the ground and justify a visit. Bruising and fractures in the shingle itself need a hand on the roof, which is why hail sits in the "book the ladder" lane rather than the "quote from video" lane.
Does the homeowner need an app to send the video?
No. The capture link opens in the phone's browser, the flow runs in their own language, and there is nothing to install or sign up for. That is the reason submissions come back the same evening instead of never.
Will an insurer accept a homeowner's video of roof damage?
Insurers already ask policyholders for photos and video, and the web is full of guides telling homeowners how. What a sealed submission adds is a server-verified receipt time, an integrity fingerprint and a full timeline, which an adjuster can check without an account. The claim decision stays with the insurer.
How is this different from a drone or an aerial measurement report?
An aerial report gives you dimensions before the estimator arrives; it says nothing about the ceiling, the loft or whether the stain is wet. The guided video gives you condition and interior from the person who is already there. Most roofers end up using both: video to triage and quote repairs, the report to price a replacement.
